The Los Angeles Kings fed off of the momentum of defeating the Vancouver Canucks on New Years Eve and looked to dominate the Colorado Avalanche at Staples Center. The Kings struck first early in the 2nd period, as Dustin Brown scored off of a rebound of a wrap around, giving the Kings a 1-0 lead. The Avalanche continued to battle and with 14:17 remaining in the 3rd, Ryan O’Reilly scored with a shot from the top of the circle to tie the game at 1. The game headed to overtime and with no scoring ended with a shootout. Milan Hejduk scored the only goal of the six shots in the shoot out to give the Avalanche the win, 2-1.
